SynopsisThis unit develops an understanding of synthetic methods, properties and applications of nanomaterials and nanofabrication techniques. The nanomaterials include zero-dimensional nanoparticles, one-dimensional nanostructures, two-dimensional thin films, nanoporous materials and nanocomposites. Principles of nanofabrication such as lithography and self-assembly will be introduced. The system will stress nanocomposites based on biomimicry and will cover a range of properties. It will highlight the importance of nanostructured materials used in biosensors, drug and gene delivery and tissue engineering. Examples of bionanotechnolgy inspired nanostructures will be covered. ObjectivesOn completion of this unit, students will understand the concepts of nanostructures and nanofabrication, have a thorough knowledge of synthesis, properties and applications of nanomaterials. They will understand engineering applications of nanomaterials in engineering applications, particularly as relates to making nanocomposites with other materials. They will understand the usefulness of the biomimetic approach in designing synthetic structures based on nature. Students will appreciate new advances lying at the interface of engineering and biology. Nanomaterials used in medicine will covered including biosensors, drug and gene delivery and for advanced scaffolds used in tissue engineering. Bionanotechnology approaches to build nanostructures using self assembling peptides and DNA will be introduced. They should have improved skills in team work, understanding the literature, completing tasks as part of a team, and also obtain improved oral and written communication skills. Assessment
