Synopsis

This unit considers both theoretical and practical issues relevant to the various participants to the audit process. The unit provides students with an overview of the assurance framework, the audit process, computer assisted audit techniques and issues related to corporate governance. Topics also include triple bottom line reporting, financial statement fraud, within firm fraud and fraud detection techniques.

Objectives

Our students will:

  • review and analyse the role and process of providing assurance services, for example, through the knowledge acquired from case studies
  • examine corporate governance best practice including the role of the board of directors, board committees, internal audit, codes of ethical conduct, different national models of corporate governance, and other systems of risk management and control
  • describe the nature of fraud and analyse and apply theories and techniques to prevent and detect fraud
  • develop capabilities to work effectively in a group; and/or demonstrate effective individual analytical and critical thinking skills to solve business problems; and/or develop oral communication skills and demonstrate independent thinking through contributions to class discussions; and demonstrate in individual summative assessment tasks the acquisition of an comprehensive understanding of the topics covered by this unit

Within semester assessment: 40%
Examination (3 hours): 60%

Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in one of the following courses: 0503, 3850, 4401 and have passed AFX9570 before undertaking this unit.
