DescriptionThis double award course allows students to study the Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing from the Gippsland Institute of TAFE in conjunction with the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) degree from Monash University. The course is managed in conjunction with Gippsland TAFE. Students receive both awards from the respective institutions upon completion of the program. ObjectivesThe course provides major studies in the theory, practice, technology and research techniques of journalism together with studies at the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE which provide students with the theoretical base and the practical skills in a variety of writing, editing and production tasks. StructureThe double award normally involves four years of full-time study; the Monash component three years. The first year consists of TAFE modules in professional writing and editing. In the second year, students take two level-one journalism units within Monash and complete the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE diploma. In the third year, students take arts degree units, including level-two journalism units and any TAFE modules still to be completed. In the fourth year, students take level-three degree units to complete the journalism major and the requirements of the Monash University degree. RequirementsBA (Journalism) componentThe journalism component must include the following: (a.) a journalism major (48 points) (b.) an arts first-year-level sequence (12 points) (c.) an arts minor (24 points) (d.) two arts electives (12 points) (e.) a further 12 points of electives. Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing componentStudents complete the diploma requirements as outlined by Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE.
