DescriptionIn addition to learning practical music skills, students will be exposed to the historical, creative, technical and cultural aspects of music. Students complete a major in music performance or in composition, in addition to studies in musicology/ethnomusicology. Students are encouraged to grasp the opportunity provided by undertaking a Bachelor of Arts to develop their imaginations and gain a broad understanding of new ideas, skills and concepts. ObjectivesThis double-degree program allows students to combine specialist studies in music with studies from the wide range of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences and communications offered within the Bachelor of Arts degree. StructureThis course consists of 96 points in the arts component and 102 points in the music component. RequirementsArts componentStudents must complete studies drawn from disciplines offered by schools other than the School of Music in the Faculty of Arts as follows: (a.) an arts major (48 points) (b.) an arts minor (24 points) (c.) an additional arts first-year sequence (12 points) (d.) a further 12 points of arts units (12 points) Students must complete at least 36 points at third-year level to meet the Bachelor of Arts requirements. Music component(a.) a performance or composition major (48 points) (b.) two music minors (48 points) (c.) further third year level music unit (6 points) For information on music majors and minors refer to the 'Areas of study' section in this Handbook at http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/aos/arts-ug-music.html Alternative exit(s)Students may graduate with the Bachelor of Music at the end of three years of study by transferring into the single Bachelor of Music degree provided they have met the requirements of the Bachelor of Music.
