Notes

  • Students have a maximum of eight years to complete this course.
  • Students may select arts units from any campus, but should be aware of the teaching location as this may require travel to another campus. Students may also select units offered in off-campus mode.

Description

This course is concerned with both new and traditional communications technologies such as print, film, television and electronic media. It explores the practical operations of mass communications technologies as well as their social and cultural aspects.

Objectives

The structured nature of the program gives students the option of undertaking a second major to help prepare them for specific vocational opportunities in addition to the skills obtained through the more general learning and teaching objectives of their studies in the humanities and social sciences.

Structure

This course consists of major in communications, a first-year sequence in visual culture or film and television studies, an arts minor, and additional arts units to a total value of 144 points.

Areas of study

Arts sequences offered at Berwick include:

  • behavioural studies
  • film and television studies
  • journalism
  • politics
  • psychology
  • public relations.

Alternatively, students select a sequence of arts units taught at one of the other campuses of the University. Students who opt for this alternative should note that it will involve travelling to another campus to attend lectures, and close attention will need to be paid to the lecture timetable.

For information on arts majors and minors, refer to the 'Areas of study' section in this Handbook at http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/aos/index-ug-byfaculty-arts.html.
