Synopsis

To complete the biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetics and the drug delivery streams of pharmaceutics including topics relating to non-oral routes of delivery, non-linear pharmacokinetics and the pharmacokinetics of drug interactions. To introduce students to the concept of therapeutic drug monitoring.
To develop skills to utilise the knowledge base in pharmaceutics to solve problems and deal with issues that are likely to occur in practice.

Objectives

In this unit, students will develop an understanding of the following. The different routes of drug delivery and the physicochemical, formulation and physiological factors that influence the delivery of drugs to the body. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic rationale for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring. The requirements, limitations and value of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring. The sources and consequences of nonlinear pharmacokinetics in drug therapy. The pharmacokinetics of drug interactions.

Assessment

Assessment task 20% and end of semester examination 80%.

Contact hours

28 hours of contact (26 lectures and one 2 hour workshop) and self directed learning: 4 on-line modules (20 hours) and an applied pharmaceutics project (24 hours).
