VCP3061 - Pharmaceutical microbiology II

Synopsis

Antisepsis. Sterilisation. Contamination control. Anti-infective agents. Chemistry of anti-infective agents. Applied immunology. Pharmacy of anti-infective agents. Practical classes, workshops and tutorials related to the lecture topics.

Objectives

Students will develop an:

  • Understanding of the structure, chemistry, function and classification, and pharmacy of a range of antimicrobial and antiparasitic agents; the nature and uses of antiseptics, disinfectants and preservatives; the role of the immune system in hypersensitivity reactions, auto-immune disease, and the development of immunity, sterilisation methods and contamination control

  • Ability in the areas of preventing contamination of pharmaceutical products and promoting rational use of antimicrobial agents.

  • Appreciation of the need to have well developed strategies for controlling infectious diseases and preventing contamination of pharmaceutical products.

Assessment

Examination 80% (3 hours)

Practical work including assignment: 20%.

39 lectures; 34 hours of practical classes and workshops; no tutorials

Successful completion of this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 6 hours per week for 12 weeks (a total of 78 hours per study period).
