Synopsis

The unit comprises two parts. 'Critical and Creative Social Work Theory and Practice' is a critical examination of social work theory as a basis for the integration of social work knowledge and practice. 'Child Abuse and Child Protection' uses the same principles in a critical examination of the child protection field.

Objectives

The learning objectives are for students to know and understand the complexities and limitations in current theoretical approaches to social work practice; reflect upon their practice to date and how this has been influenced be their values and attitudes as well as external factors such as agency settings; reflect upon key concepts of social work practice (for example the social worker-client relationship); develop an understanding of social work practice from the perspective of different client groups (for example children); be able to develop and apply frameworks for understanding problems at personal and societal levels.

Critical and Creative Social Work Theory and Practice - Essay (2250 words): 50%
Child Abuse and Child Protection - Essay (2250 words): 50%
