Synopsis

Research in radiography and medical imaging: moral and ethical issues, sources of information, scientific methodology, quantitative and qualitative research in radiography and medical imaging; current trends in research, constructing a research proposal, literature review, analysis and interpretation of research data; feedback and appraisal, effective communication: written and oral reporting, critical evaluation of data and research publications, supervised participation in a research project leading to the creation of a minor thesis.

Objectives

On completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. explain different methods of knowledge acquisition and synthesis and the moral, ethical and legal responsibilities of scientific investigation;

2. describe basic research concepts and methodology

3. compare a range of different research designs utilising qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection;

4. understand the role and current range of research conducted in the Medical Radiation Sciences;

5. use of a personal computer for data management, statistical analysis and scientific communication;

6. develop a research proposal based on a selected topic

7. critically review the literature related to the research topic;

8. construct a minor thesis; and

9. communicate research findings to peers and professional colleagues.

Methodology assignment and statistics exercise: 15%

Only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging.
