Synopsis

PTY4070 continues to develop the five themes upon which the four year curriculum is based. These are:

• Theme 1: Personal and Professional Development;
• Theme 2: Population, Society and Health;
• Theme 3: Fundamental Knowledge of Health Science;
• Theme 4: Applied Practice; and
• Theme 5: Research.

Delivery of physiotherapy services and ongoing case based learning provide opportunities for integration of the different themes within the course. Students undertake an extended clinical attachment (12 weeks) during this unit, providing them the opportunity to apply integrated knowledge and skills from previous learning in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy to acute patient care.

Objectives

There are 42 specific objectives for this unit that address the five themes outlined in the unit synopsis.

Assessment

Summative assessment: Clinical (APP) assessment: 75%+ Clinical Examination: 5%+ Research Proposal (1000 words): 15%
Research Submission (2,500 words): 5%
On-line case study task.
+ Students must obtain a minimum of 50% in each of the three summative clinical assessments and clinical examinations.
+ Hurdle requirements:Achieve a pass grade in each of three summative clinical assessments and clinical examinations, complete a reflective portfolio and clinical log, participate in designated interprofessional case based learning activities, attend a minimum of 80% of scheduled clinical hours complete Learning Needs Form at the commencement and completion of each clinical major study area, complete self assessments using the Australian Physiotherapy Practice (APP) assessment tool and present a project report to staff and peers at the clinical site.
Formative assessment: Weekly self assessment based on the Australian Physiotherapy Practice (APP) assessment tool; Student/Supervisor feedback conference at 2 weekly intervals.

Contact hours

12 weeks of acute physiotherapy clinical practice. Students will spend approximately 34 hours per week in their clinical placements. For every 2 clinical contact hours, students are expected to complete a minimum 1 additional hour of self directed learning and reflection related to their experiences in delivery of physiotherapy services, unit content, self-directed learning tasks, project design and execution and further reading as described in the PTY4070 Unit Guide and Clinical Manual.
