Synopsis

PHL1020 consists of two distinct components, which may vary from year to year. The components offered will be drawn from the following list:

  1. Time, Self and Freedom;
  2. God, Freedom, and Evil
  3. Greeks and the Good Life;
  4. Philosophy of Sex; and
  5. Crime and Punishment.

Objectives

Students successfully completing this subject will acquire:

  1. skills in argument analysis,
  2. improved comprehension of complex texts,
  3. the ability to critically interpret philosophical positions
  4. improved written communication skills.
Students will also obtain familiarity with central ideas in the history of philosophy, and begin to develop an understanding of important philosophical theories.

Assessment

Three short exercises (1250 words): 30%
Essay (1250 words): 30%
Examination: 40%

Contact hours

3 hours (two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites

None, but it is recommended that students take PHL1010 prior to PHL1020.
