A survey of the history of keyboard instruments from the earliest hydraulic organ to the latest electronic reconstruction. In terms of repertoire, the 'peak' pieces are examined against the background of styles and forms of lesser known works, with selected works studied in detail.
On successful conclusion of the unit, students should be able to recognise keyboard styles by ear and eye and be able to locate them on a chronology of broader artistic styles.
Four short assignments (1000) words: 10%
