MUM4180 - Chamber Music History and Repertoire12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSLPostgraduate Faculty of ArtsLeader: Carol WilliamsOfferedNot offered in 2008 SynopsisThis unit covers historical and analytical perspectives on major chamber works from the Middle Ages to the present, including the development of the sonata form, seen as the result of adapted vocal forms influenced by dance music. Also considered are the propriety of the modern concert hall for the presentation of the intimate chamber music model; the social origins of chamber music; and performance modes - amateur or professional. ObjectivesOn successful completion of the unit, students should have an understanding of the growth and development of musical forms for small ensembles seen as an outcome of cultural change as well as a number of methods of analytical inquiry which can be applied specifically to chamber forms.
