MTE5508 - Advanced ceramic engineering

6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL

Postgraduate Faculty of Engineering

Leader: J R Sellar

Offered

Clayton Second semester 2008 (Off-campus)

Synopsis

Ceramic technologies are among the oldest as well as the most modern. They range from glass and porcelain manufacture to aerospace and semiconductor processing. Many engineering tasks can only be solved by the use of ceramic materials. This course equips an engineer with the capability to design for wear or hardness properties in a mining project, as one example, or for biocompatibility in the manufacture of ceramic prostheses as another.

Specific topics include: Structure of ceramics. Glass and glass-ceramics. Ceramic processing. Sintering techniques. Mechanical properties. Thermal properties. Electroceramics. Porous materials. Bioceramics.
