Clayton Second semester 2008 (Day)
The major part of this unit is a reverse engineering materials identification project. Students also produce an engineering drawing of a component and critically analyse the design. A considered estimate of the cost of manufacture of the component is to be made. Students attend a workshop practice session, to experience some hands-on metal working processes involving the basic operations of milling and turning. Lectures on the sources of error in experimentation will be held, the topics including the elements of basic statistics.
The objectives of the unit are to develop:
Final report: 40%
Oral report: 5%
Test:15%
Assignments: 20%
Workshop: 5%
Laboratory records: 5%
20 lecture/practice classes, 12 x 3hr laboratory experiments
