Synopsis
Basic concepts of management and leadership are required by managers in health care settings and also by health care professionals who have responsibilty for designing and delivering clinical care. This unit provides a broad overview of leadership and management concepts within the context of health services for both aspiring health care managers and health care professionals seeking the skills to manage and lead in their clinical roles.
The unit involves a structured review of key management and leadership concepts via WebCT based modules and readings. This is supplemented by a workshop with senior health care management practitioners and weekly on-line discussion of the application of these concepts to dealing with management issues and problems in the workplace, creating an opportunity to reflect and learn from fellow students. The content underpins a variety of other management units within the Department of Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine and is a core unit of all Health Services Management courses.
