Synopsis

Introduction to the environment, parties and processes involved in Australian industrial relations. The unit aims to create an understanding of industrial relations at the macro level and to develop analytical skills appropriate to solving industrial relations problems. Topics covered include employer associations and management, theories of unionism, conciliation and arbitration, enterprise bargaining, grievance and disciplinary procedures, wages policy, and legislative reform of industrial relations.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

• examine the parties, processes, and concepts underpinning industrial and workplace relations
• describe the main institutional features and key developments in the Australian industrial and workplace relations system
• critically evaluate contemporary national and international developments in industrial and workplace relations as they impact upon the employment relationship and the workplace
• apply knowledge of principles and theories of industrial and workplace relations gained in the unit to the Australian workplace and workplaces in other countries.

On-campus: Within semester assessment: 40%
Examination (3 hours): 60%, Off-campus: Within semester assessment:40%
