Synopsis

This unit concentrates on the management of human resources in the external and internal organisation context. It focuses on the contribution of HRM to competitive advantage via an analysis of HR planning, job design, staffing, reward systems, staff development, and HRM auditing. The relationship between the legal, ethical, and industrial relations issues and HRM is also explored.

Objectives

The learning objectives of this unit are to:

  • develop a knowledge base in strategic and functional HRM activities;
  • analyse and evaluate the strategic contribution that can be made by HRM;
  • examine the connection between HRM and the behaviour and performance of individuals and groups in organisations;
  • develop awareness of the field of HRM as an academic field and as a profession within the field of management;
  • develop the capacity to consider HRM within the context of broader internal and external organisational environmental conditions.

Within semester assessment: 50%
Examination (3 hours): 50%

Three hours of class contact.

Prerequisites

24 credit points including MGF1010. Recommendation: Students should study this unit in the 2nd year of their course.
