MEU0005 - Educational research methods for the health professions

Synopsis

The unit focuses on the role of research in contemporary health professional education and practice. More specifically it will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in a general programme of training in research methods tailored to their teaching environment.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit participants will be able to:

1. outline the significance of educational research to the foundations and development of health professional education and practice;
2. demonstrate a sound knowledge-base related to the research process including the ability to critique education and practice;
3. critically examine and select appropriately both research methods and tools for evaluating practice;
4. apply appropriate qualitative and quantative research methods to educational research related to health professions;
5. pursue and develop the advanced study of research methods and in particular address contemporary issues of epistemology, data collection, measurement and data analysis in respective areas of health professional education;
6. identify key ethical issues associated with the research process especially as it relates to human subjects involved in research education;
7. develop a research proposal for submission to the University Human Studies and Ethics Committee;
8. question the nature of knowledge and educational evidence.
