Clayton First semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThis unit introduces the second year mechanical engineering students to the concepts of time, space, coordinate systems, particles, rigid bodies, forces, work, energy and Newton's Laws of Motion. The students will be instructed on particle kinematics and kinetics, systems of particles, planar kinematics and kinetics of rigid bodies and moments of inertia. They will also be presented with an introduction to 3-dimensional dynamics of rigid bodies. Work-energy and impulse-momentum methods will also be covered. The fundamentals of mechanical vibration, analysis and synthesis of planar mechanisms and experimental modelling will complete the unit. Objectives
