Synopsis

This is the final core unit of the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Medicine. The unit will outline general principles of recovery following major events using a sample of recent major events from Australia, Oceania and/or Asia. The unit will explore the ongoing community health support that may be required, the psychosocial issues of recovery, and the restoration of health infrastructure following major events.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit the student should be able to:

1. Describe disaster recovery planning and the medical public health psychological and behavioural issues which may need to be managed.
2. Describe attitudes and skills to continue to develop and further enhance their personal and professional development as emergency care providers.
3. Critically review the strategies to care for self as an emergency care provider.
4. Explore the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes necessary to practice as an emergency care provider within an appropriate ethical and professional construct.

Assessment

Pre-block reading task (1,000 words) (10%), 4 x worksheets during block (500 words each) (20%), 2 x assignments (2,000 words each) (70%).

Contact hours

5 day full-time block, comprising lectures, tutorials, case-based discussion, interactive learning in small groups, and WebCT-based support.
