Synopsis
The unit will examine wine regulation from the vine to The unit will examine agriculture, food safety and wine regulation in Europe. It will therefore cover:
- The law of the Common Agricultural Policy
- Laws protecting grape varieties
- Laws covering food safety
- Laws on labelling: Geographical Indicators, Trade Marks, Consumer
Information, Quality indicators
- The EU-Australia Wine Agreements
- Geographic designations and the World Trade Organisation
- Commercial usages in the wine and food trade between Europe and Australia
- Taxation of wine in Europe
Objectives
At the completion of this unit, students should:
- Understand the framework of agriculture, food and wine regulation in the European Union;
- Understand the policy underlying the Common Agricultural Policy and its technicalities;
- Understand the food safety regime of the EU;
- Appreciate the different forms of intellectual property protection for grape varieties, foods and wines
- Appreciate the international dimensions of wine and food identity protection
- Understand the special commercial aspects of the European/Australian wine and food trade
- Understand the different methods of taxing wine in Europe.
