Synopsis

This unit examines the structure, function and powers of local government in Victoria and provides a detailed
examination of the Local Government Act 1989 and other related legislation.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, students will have an understanding of:

  • The framework for local government in the context of
recent legislative developments (namely the
introduction of the Local Government Act 1989)
  • The framework of the Local Government Act 1989 in
the context of other legislation affecting the powers
and functions of local government
  • The structure of local government
  • The powers councils have to attain their objectives,
purposes and functions

Assessment

Research paper (3,750 words): 50%
Take home examination (3,750 words): 50%
