Synopsis

An overview of major world events in the Twentieth Century in order to gain an understanding of how the world has come to be as it is today. Themes include nationalism and imperialism; democracy and the First World War; Communism; Fascism and the Second World War; decolonisation; postwar affluence and youth movements; the collapse of Communism.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of modern world history.

2. Understand who we are and how we got here.

3. Demonstrate sound knowledge of current affairs and debates about the future.

4. Demonstrate improved oral and written communication skills, particularly in relation to the analysis and explanation of ideas and the development of argument.

5. Successfully undertake a variety of research and writing tasks.

Document analysis (1000 words): 20%
Essay (1500 words): 30%
Examination (2 hours): 40%
Tutorial participation: 10%
