Synopsis

The major themes of study are levels of body organisation, body support and movement, and cardiopulmonary physiology. The unit introduces students to the scientific methods of thought; it encourages the critical evaluation of evidence, and promotes an awareness of the changing nature of medical knowledge. Topics include the chemical and cellular basis of human life; integration of body functions and homeostasis; the structure and function of the integumentary system; the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system; the structure and function of the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system; and the structure and function of the respiratory system.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. apply the concept of homeostasis to physiological processes;

  1. describe the basic structure and function of tissues, cells, and cellular components of the human body;

  1. relate the structure of the integumentary system to its function across the lifespan;

  1. relate the structure of the major bones and muscles to the functions of support and movement;

  1. relate the structure of the heart, circulatory and lymphatic systems to the functions of transport and maintenance of homeostasis;

  1. relate the structure of the respiratory system to the mechanics of ventilation and the processes of gas exchange and transport;

  1. observe, measure and present clinical data and discuss the validity of the data; and

  1. apply theoretical concepts to simulated clinical scenarios to develop a framework for the scientific understanding of clinical practice.

Assessment

On-line test (5): 10%
Laboratory work (3): 30%
Examination (2 hours): 60%
