EDF6501 - Counselling psychology: theory, research and practice12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSLPostgraduate Faculty of EducationLeader: Dr J SimmondsOfferedClayton First semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisIn this unit, core research-based psychological counselling skills and psychological therapies are addressed, evaluated and practised. Topics include models of helping, advanced skills, issues in evaluating evidence and outcome, assumptions and issues underlying research paradigms, diversity-sensitive counselling. ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and application of the relevant psychological counselling microskills and be able to integrate them to conduct sessions; be able to describe and apply sound practice principles concerning the therapeutic relationship setting, and interventions, and be able to critically discuss and apply the research concerning the scientific evaluation of various psychotherapies.
