Gippsland Second semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThis unit introduces the importance of building connections between the learner, the school and community in which the learner is situated whether within Australia or elsewhere. The unit particularly takes a cross-curriculum perspective through exploring the nature and language of school content knowledge. Specifically, student teachers will make connections between different ways of knowing, thinking and engagement with the social world. A variety of pedagogies will be critiqued in the context of evaluation, assessment and reporting but also in relation to the contributions of specific pedagogy to knowledge integration (across the curriculum) and to making connections beyond the classroom. ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this unit, students should have acquired a variety of pedagogical approaches aimed at making connections between different ways of knowing, thinking about and engaging with the world; an understanding of learning theories and frameworks within the context of the connections between the family, the child, the community and schooling in a range of cross-cultural contexts; skills in planning and managing whole group sessions, including critical knowledge of pedagogical approaches, curriculum design and assessment and evaluation issues specific to the 5 - 12 year old learner.
