This unit introduces the practice of teaching in primary schools. Specific teaching techniques, such as making observations, asking questions and providing explanations are introduced and refined in contexts of practice. The appropriateness of these for different children and learning environments is critiqued. Utilising information and communication technologies, in planning for and delivering sessions form part of this unit. The fieldwork component provides opportunity for students to put these techniques into practice.
Upon successful completion of the unit, the students should have acquired an appreciation of themselves as learners and how classrooms can be places where teachers as well as children can learn [professional issues]; techniques in making observations, giving directions, asking questions and providing explanations, developed and refined in contexts of practice [techniques and skills]; skills in planning and managing small group learning sessions, including ICTs utilized for these purposes [planning and management].
