Synopsis

This unit concerns the part played by the school library and the teacher librarian in the implementation of the school curriculum, the improvement of student learning, and the development and expansion of children's reading interests. It will explore the importance of collection development and management, focusing on the use made of school library resources by students and teachers. It will look at issues to do with the readability of texts for children with different linguistic abilities and learning styles, and audiovisual and digital multimedia materials suitable for different ages and classroom situations.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. evaluate children's texts in relation to their suitability for different ages, linguistic ability, learning styles and curriculum applications;
  2. use appropriate selection tools to choose materials which support curriculum implementation;
  3. suggest fiction titles for individual readers, as well as reading lists for different ages and subjects;
  4. discuss with teaching colleagues the resources implications of units of work, including school-based resources, broader community resources and web-based information;
  5. give detailed information about and instructions on how to find information;
  6. demonstrate knowledge of school curriculum, and be able to select and discuss resources relevant to individual areas of study;
  7. guide individual library users to resources they need (locally and from the broader library network), and provide training in their use;
  8. locate, organise and publish web-based information;
  9. make resources easily accessible to library users through appropriate collection management (classification, location and allocation of subject headings) and user education.

Assessment

This unit is graded Pass Grade Only (PGO); Assessment task 1: Bibliography evaluating Children's Literature in relation to curriculum support; (2,000 words or equivalent; 50%); Assessment task 2: Web page/site for publishing to a library website (2,000 words or equivalent; 50%)Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory completion of teaching practice.

Level 3, undergraduate degree or Study as required for Associate (Professional) Membership of the Australian Librarian and Information Association.
