Synopsis

This unit aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge, resources, values, and philosophies of camping, and in particular, the role of the camp leader. The course will familiarise students with the planning, organisational and administrative aspects of residential base camping, particularly with respect to programs for schools. Practical application of theories and skills associated with residential camping will be incorporated into this unit which will include planning and attendance at camps.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will have developed knowledge and understanding of the historical basis of residential camping; the theoretical basis of residential camp programmes and a personal philosophy towards residential camping; experience in programming for residential camps, including the needs of specific populations; an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the different people associated with the operation of a camp; practical learning experiences related to leading, organising, and administering a residential base camp; a personal resource file relevant to all aspects of camping; an awareness of legal responsibility as it relates to camp leaders, organisation and administration.

Assessment

Essay (1200 words): 30%
Assignment (2800 words): 70%
Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory completion of camp practicum.
