Synopsis

This unit examines how the development of literacy is embedded in young children's play and life experiences. Teaching approaches building on what children already know about literacy and which emphasise the role of teachers and parents as co-constructors in developing children's literacy will be examined. The literacy teaching implications for children who are not speakers of the main language of instruction will be addressed.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complex link between a child's life experiences, individual growth, family background and the development of literacy; ability to analyse and evaluate young children's literature in relation to its appropriateness for particular literacy teaching/learning processes; understanding of reading and writing processes for young children; appreciation of the importance of supporting parents as the first teachers of their children as literacy learners; awareness of how technology can be used to support and enhance young children's literacy development; ability to plan appropriate literacy teaching, monitoring, recording and evaluation strategies for young literacy learners.

Assessment

Assignment (2400 words): 60%
Written tasks (1600 words): 40%
Completion of tutorial tasks and homework. Participation in follow up discussion and groupwork.
