EDF2507 - Early childhood teaching studies 1

Synopsis

Module 1: Theory of developmentally based programs in EC education including program provision, assessment and guidance will be introduced. The professional responsibilities expected of an EC teacher according to the Australian Early Childhood Code of Ethics will be examined. Module 2 focuses on the use of Learning Technologies to facilitate teaching and learning in early childhood and school settings

Objectives

Module 1 - As a result of studying this unit students are expected to begin to understand the theoretical constructs underpinning the curriculum/programs in early childhood education, and in particular, the importance of play in young children's learning and development; begin to develop skill at planning and providing environments and experiences that will support and extend the learning and development of young children in early childhood settings; demonstrate sensitivity to individual children's backgrounds, interests, strengths and levels of development and learning; understand the importance of establishing high-quality adult; child interactions that will lead to reciprocal relationships and mutual trust and respect; begin to understand relevant professional and ethical issues in early childhood education; begin to develop skill at linking theory to practice, and to reflect on their own growth and development as a pre-service teacher; successfully complete a twenty day practicum in a three-to-five year old program within a child care placement. Module 2 - At the conclusion of module 2 of this unit, students will have developed an understanding and appreciation of the role of learning technologies in primary education; computer user skills necessary for the effective use of the computer as a teaching aid; an understanding of and experience in structuring, organising, and operating a variety of learning technologies across the curriculum; an understanding of the logistics of using learning technologies as part of the teaching process.

Assessment

PGO only. Students must gain a satisfactory grade in both modules in order to pass the unit
Module 1: satisfactory grade in Practicum placement and all written requirements including tutorial tasks
Module 2: Satisfactory grade in all written and practical tasks.
