Gippsland First semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThis unit provides the introduction to the major influences on language development in children appropriate for prospective teachers. The unit will examine relevant theoretical models and derived approaches as well as relate the study to practical implementation in educational settings. The focus on the early development of oracy and literacy and the role of care-givers and teachers will be a key feature. An introduction to the English curriculum as a fundamental Key Learning Area in schools and the teacher's role in facilitating language development, including a study of Learning Technologies relating to English will also be included. ObjectivesThe learning objectives of this unit are to explain the similarities and differences among theories of children's early language development; outline the social and cultural influences on children's emergent literacy development; outline the influences care-givers and families have on language development; differentiate between the language and social practices of the home and school settings; outline and explain the nature and structure of the English literacy curriculum as a Key Learning Area; outline and explain the impact of information technologies on children's literacy development; outline and explain a coherent model of reading; describe a coherent model of children's reading development; administer, score and interpret a child's Reading Observation Survey.
