Synopsis

This unit is designed as a core offering to enable students to develop the fundamental understandings, theoretical concepts and practical skills necessary for the teaching of primary music through a program of participation in music performance and a range of theoretical problems and exercises. Students will develop an understanding of rhythm, melody, dynamics, tone colour, harmony and music notation through practical activities which may include classroom percussion instruments, guitar, recorder and vocal or choral performance.

Objectives

As a result of studying this unit students are expected to have developed an understanding of fundamental musical concepts and terminology, including an understanding of notation in both the treble clef and graphic and proportional notation; be able to apply basic music concepts in performing in a variety of musical styles; have developed competence in adequate performance techniques on instruments found in the Primary classroom; have performed simple music accurately and cooperatively in groups or alone on instruments found in the Primary classroom; have composed cooperatively some music as member of a group; have listened to a range of musics, including both western and world music.
