Clayton First semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThis unit provides an introduction to the important aspects of modern telecommunication systems. Particular emphasis is given to digital communication systems including the internet. The concept of layered architectures will be introduced. Topics will include modulation techniques, source and error coding, multiplexing, peer to peer protocols, LAN protocols, packet switching, TCP/IP architecture and network security. ObjectivesThis unit aims to provide the student with an insight into the basic principles of modern data communication and telecommunication networks, and relate this information to their wider use in the engineering environment, including networking, information representation and transmission.
