Synopsis

Overview of of wireless and personal communications systems, the market and technology trends and evolution; Second generation digital cellular radio systems (IS-136, GSM, IS-95); Cordless telephony system standards (DECT, CT-2, Spread Spectrum); Multiple access system fundamentals - (TDMA, CDMA etc); Wireless LANs (RF and Infrared, 802.11, Hiperlan, Bluetooth); Medium Access Control protocols for wireless systems (CSMA/CA, NPMA); Network management for wireless and personal communications systems; Security and privacy issues for wireless and personal communications systems. Security systems (MIN/ESN, SSD, Token-based secret key systems, Public key systems).

Assessment

Two assignments: 25% each
Final 2-hour examination: 50%

Contact hours

Lectures: 2hrs/week, tutorial: 2hrs/week

Prerequisites

CSE4881 or CSE4882. Knowledge: An introduction to digital communications technologies with emphasis on design issues and technologies of the two lower layers (physical layer and data link layer) of the communication stack. Topics studied should include: Modulation and coding techniques. Multiplexing and switching. Digital Modulation techniques and modem standards. LAN technologies and MAC techniques. Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, etc,. N-ISDN, Frame Relay and ATM. Wireless PANs, LANs, WAN architecture and technologies. Satellite communications.
