Synopsis

This unit aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of network and information security. Topics to be covered include network components and services, network computer systems and security policy, security at different system layers, basic cryptography and information security, intrusion detection system, malicious code and detection and prevention systems, authentication systems, and wireless security.

Objectives

At the completion of this subject, students should be able to understand:

  1. The fundamentals of Network Security issues including possible vulnerabilities in a computer system, software and hardware applications;
  2. Weaknesses of current Network Protocols;
  3. Basic symmetric and asymmetric cryptography including DES and RSA;
  4. Computer malicious codes such as viruses, logic bombs, etc;
  5. Basic concepts of Intrusion Detection Systems;
  6. Basic concepts of Firewalls and other network security components;
  7. Security design at different levels of OSI model;
  8. Basics of Unix and Windows Security;
  9. Fundamentals of Wireless LAN security;

At the completion of this unit
students should have developed
Attitudes, Values and Beliefs and practical skills to:
  1. Become familiar with network security architectures and network security components;
  2. Gain experience of Unix and Networking services and security;
  3. Gain experience of cryptographic packages such as PGP;
  4. Gain experience of simple packet filtering firewalls.

At the completion of this unit students should have aquired the communication skills to:
  1. Experience the need of cooperative security management;
  2. Work effectively in group to achieve a system implementation.
