BTH2752 - Cellular metabolism6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSLUndergraduate Faculty of ScienceLeader: Ms Jenny MosseOffered
Gippsland Second semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThe unit begins with a general overview of metabolism and bioenergetics. This is followed by a comprehensive survey of cellular metabolism including: the generation of energy from major dietary components: carbohydrate, protein and lipid; the biosynthesis of carbohydrates, lipids and nucleotides; and amino acid metabolism. A study of photosynthesis illustrates the linkage between electron transport systems and biosyntheses. The integration and control of cellular biochemistry and the role of hormones in metabolic regulation is emphasised. ObjectivesOn the completion of this unit students should understand the mechanisms involved in the storage and processing of metabolic fuels and the control of metabolic reaction sequences; the specialised metabolic role of various tissues; the integration and regulation of metabolic processes. Students should demonstrate advanced laboratory skills, in particular data collection/interpretation and report writi Assessment
