BNS2011 - Brain structure and function6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSLUndergraduate Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health SciencesLeader: Dr Russell ConduitOfferedClayton First semester 2008 (Day) SynopsisThis unit reviews the gross and cellular structure of the brain and spinal cord and the structures that enclose the nervous system. The majority of the course examines the structural and functional organisation of the spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, thalamus, basal ganglia, hypothalamus, cerebral cortex, vasculature and ventricular systems. Emphasis will be placed on how these various parts of the brain mediate behaviour and the neurological consequences that result from their dysfunction. Objectives
The primary objective of this unit is to introduce students to the principles and concepts underpinning the functional organisation of the human nervous system. At the completion of the unit students will understand:
