Synopsis
Delivered in conjunction with ARC1102. Examines architectural design in terms of its potential and actual impact upon sensory experience. Focused on the exploration of materials and fabrication techniques as they relate to the development coherent three-dimension designs and introduces the process of problem definition and formulating response strategies with respect to an architectural brief.
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit, students will:
1. Begin to be able to synthesize the exploration of material systems with the design process; 2. have a basic understanding of the relationship between technical and programmatic requirements as they apply to the architectural design process; 3. have developed the ability to apply basic material testing procedures to the design process; 4. understand the implications of design decisions as they affect sensory experience; 5. demonstrate the ability to work with design methods appropriate to the chosen material; 6. have the ability to critically analyse and respond to a brief; 7. understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

Portfolio submission: 80%
Project presentation: 10%
Studio attendance and participation: 10%
