Caulfield First semester 2008 (Day)
Synopsis
Delivered in conjunction with ARC1101. Introduces architectural design as a process of investigation, critical observation, and experiment. Focuses on design as a process engaged with the three-dimensional and material testing of ideas. Projects will be formulated to introduce issues such as scale in relation to the human body, site and environmental contexts, basic techniques of three-dimensional composition and the correct use of architectural drawing conventions.
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit, students will:
1. Have a basic level of competence in architectural design and composition; 2. have the ability to follow a brief; 3. have a basic level of understanding of how observation, analysis and critique apply to the architectural design process; 4. have begun to engage with design as a process of testing ideas and have a basic level of understanding of the design process in terms of iteration, refinement and development; 5. have developed the ability to synthesize and apply fabrication and model-making skills to the design process; 6. have the capacity to conceive designs in three dimensions; 7. have developed basic skills in verbal, graphic and 3d presentation; 8. have acquired an understanding of the conventions of 2d architectural drawing and representation; 9. Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

Project presentation: 10%
Studio attendance and participation: 10%
Contact hours
12 hours per week, including 4 hours studio and 8 hours of independent study.
Co-requisites
ARC1101 and OHS1000.
