AFX4080 - Issues in banking

Synopsis

This unit draws on the academic literature to provide a study of a range of topics relating to banking and finance including theory of financial intermediation, risk management and bank regulation.

Objectives

The learning objectives of this unit are to:

  • discuss existing theory in the field of banking and its evolution;
  • critically assess the usefulness and limitations of this theory in the field of banking;
  • apply this theory to relevant current policy issues;
  • critically evaluate empirical research and identify major research questions in banking;
  • apply critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills in individual and/or group activities dealing with issues in banking.

Assessment

Within semester assessment: 40%
Examination (3 hours): 60%

3 hours per week

Prerequisites

Enrolment in an honours program offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics, or with approval from the unit leader

Co-requisites

Must be enrolled in Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) or Postgraduate Diploma in Economics and Commerce
