Synopsis

This unit provides an introduction to financial planning. Coverage includes: the legislative and economic environment; the role of financial service advisers; licensing and disclosure; investment strategies, products, and related taxation implications, with particular reference to securities and managed investments; social security; superannuation, pensions and other retirement issues; estate planning; and the financial planning process. This unit meets Australian Securities and Investments Commission registration requirements for Tier 1 in respect of: specific knowledge in financial planning, securities, managed investments and superannuation; generic knowledge; and skills.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

  • understand the financial planning environment including legislation which affects licence holders and advisers.
  • develop skills in analysis and problem solving that are critical in the preparation of financial plans
  • develop an understanding of personal budgeting, risk, investment products and strategy, taxation, social security, superannuation, retirement and estate planning
  • understand the steps involved in preparing a comprehensive, best practice and FSR compliant financial plan
  • understand the role of ethics and effective communication in dealing with clients and the way in which complaints are dealt with

Assessment

Within semester assessment: 30%
Examination (3 hours): 70%
