Computing - Faculty of Science

Coordinator: Associate Professor Guojun Lu

The discipline

The Faculty of Information Technology offers a major sequence in computing which can be included as a science sequence for the Bachelor of Science course. The sequence focuses on the development of computer-based applications, exploring computer technology, programming environments and system development, with a range of more specialised options at third level.

Units offered

Level one

Level two

  • FIT2009 Data structures and algorithms
  • FIT2020 Networks and data communications 2
  • FIT2029 Web programming
  • GCO2815 Database management systems

Level three

  • FIT3002 Applications of data mining
  • FIT3005 Computer graphics
  • FIT3011 Enterprise programming
  • FIT3028 Multimedia concepts and applications
  • FIT3031 Network security
  • FIT3046 Operating environments
  • GCO3812 Data communications and networks 1
  • GCO3824 Data communications and networks 2

Sequence requirements

Minor sequence in computing (24 points)

Major sequence in computing (48 points)

Students seeking to include FIT2009 and/or FIT3005 in their major sequence must also include the unit FIT1007, thereby increasing the total points for the major to 54.

Recommendations

Level one

The unit MAT1077, which is described in the `Mathematical sciences' entry in this section of the handbook, provides useful mathematical background to support these studies.
