Structure and organisation of the faculty - Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences comprises the academic, technical and administrative staff of the faculty, as well as all students undertaking courses offered by the faculty. Study areas include ambulance and paramedic studies, behavioural neuroscience, biomedical science, emergency health (paramedic), health sciences, medicine, midwifery, nursing, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, radiography and medical imaging, and social work. In addition, a significant contribution is made by the faculty to the teaching of science students.

The faculty is divided into eight schools as follows:

  • School of Applied Clinical and Public Health Sciences (Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine; Monash Institute of Health Services Research)
  • School of Biomedical Sciences (Anatomy and Cell Biology; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Microbiology; Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISCL); Pharmacology; Physiology; Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences)
  • School of Nursing and Midwifery (at Peninsula and Gippsland)
  • Central and Eastern Clinical School (Forensic Medicine; Medicine; Pathology and Immunology; Surgery)
  • Southern Clinical School (Anaesthesia; Monash Institute for Reproduction and Development; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Paediatrics; Medicine; Surgery)
  • School of Primary Health Care (General Practice; Ambulance and Paramedic Studies; Health Science, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Social Work)
  • School of Rural Health (based at Latrobe Regional Hospital, Traralgon, with major sites at Mildura, Bendigo and Bairnsdale)
  • School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine (Psychology; Psychological Medicine; Psychiatry).

The faculty has strong links with research institutes such as the Baker Medical Research Institute (The Alfred), the Prince Henry's Institute for Medical Research (Monash Medical Centre), the Mental Health Research Institute, and the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health and with our major teaching hospitals, principally Monash Medical Centre, The Alfred and Box Hill. In total, the faculty operates in 125 practices and 68 hospitals. The faculty board governs the academic operations of the faculty. The dean is the chairperson of faculty board and has administrative responsibility for the faculty. Heads of schools support the dean with administrative and resource management matters, while the faculty manager is responsible for the overall general, teaching and research administration of the faculty. The associate deans and the deputy deans provide assistance with academic and student matters.

Teaching in the hospitals and other clinical settings is coordinated through the offices of the assistant deans (clinical) and the hospital clinical deans. Heads of schools, in conjunction with heads of departments and directors of centres and institutes, provide academic leadership within their disciplines and are responsible for the management of staff and resources. Heads and directors, together with all other professors, play a significant role in the overall academic activities of the faculty.
