Translation studies - Faculty of Arts

Offered by the School of Languages Cultures and Linguistics

Translation studies is an interdisciplinary subject drawing on a wide variety of fields, including language and literary studies, philosophical and theoretical studies, as well as technology, science, finance and law. At Monash, translation studies is a postgraduate program designed to provide an academic qualification for those intending to take up careers as professional translators working in a broad range of fields, such as business, science, technology and cross-cultural communication, as well as for those who wish to pursue careers in publishing, journalism or other areas of the media.

Some language programs in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics offer translation units as part of their minor and major sequences. At fourth-year level, students may undertake a translation project as an honours dissertation, or they may enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Translation Studies or the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies.

Students considering a career as translators or interpreters are encouraged to seek advice on possible pathways and may make an appointment with the coordinator of the program.
