Indonesian studies - Faculty of Arts

Offered by the School of Languages Cultures and Linguistics

The Indonesian language program aims to facilitate students' progress towards a high level of communications skills in a cross-cultural setting. The discipline involves the integration of language skills in standard Indonesian with knowledge of the broader social and cultural contexts of Indonesia. For information on the units required for a major or minor in Indonesian studies, refer to the `Areas of Study' section on the Arts faculty website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/studyareas/. The language program is offered via three modes: on-campus (Clayton and Caulfield), off-campus and in-country. Students have the choice to move between any of these modes or between campuses during their progression through the program.

In-country studies

Students who wish to fast-track their language major in Indonesian and gain valuable in-country experience are encouraged to intensive mode at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. This intensive program, equivalent to two 6-point units takes approximately six weeks and is held during the summer. This program is only available on a fee-paying basis, however travel grants are available from Monash Abroad. Details are available at: http://www.monash.edu.au/students/studyabroad/.

Off-campus language studies

Students who are unable to attend classes due to timetable clashes or periods away from Melbourne may consider off-campus study of a unit at anytime during their language program. Off-campus students will have both print and electronic materials posted to them and have access to our educational website. Students may also access the on-campus library materials via post or by visiting a Monash campus and consult with their tutors either face-to-face or via telephone or email. Additional face-to-face support and practice is provided via a weekend workshop each semester.

Indonesian studies and Asian studies

All Indonesian language students are encouraged to enrol in Indonesian studies or Asian studies units. These units have no Indonesian language prerequisites. Indonesian and Asian studies units are taught in both schools of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Business and Economics. These units can be taken as part of the Indonesian language major, or as a separate major or minor in Asian studies.
