Introduction to the faculty

The Faculty of Business and Economics operates on the Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses in Victoria, the Sunway campus near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and the Monash South Africa campus near Johannesburg. The faculty has over 16,000 students and offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees, executive certificates, graduate certificates and diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, masters degrees by both research and coursework, and doctor of business administration and doctor of philosophy degrees. A range of flexible learning study methods including off-campus learning and Open Universities Australia, as well as on-campus study are available.

The Faculty of Business and Economics has been awarded International Business School accreditation by the Brussels-based European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). The accreditation establishes Monash's Faculty of Business and Economics as one of the world's leading higher education institutions in management and business administration. Its MBA program is internationally accredited by the London-based Association of MBAs (AMBA).

The mission of the faculty is to use its scale, scope, internal diversity and international perspective to become a leader in the pursuit, dissemination and analysis of knowledge, in accounting, banking, business law, business statistics, econometrics, economics, finance, international business, management, marketing, taxation, tourism and associated disciplines. Through the application of that knowledge its staff and students will contribute to the scholarly, social and commercial development of Australia, its neighbours and trading partners.

The term `Faculty of Business and Economics' in the wider sense includes all students enrolled for degrees, diplomas and certificates offered by the faculty, and the staff (academic, administrative, technical and clerical) attached to the campuses that make up the faculty.

The faculty is a body established under university statute. It comprises a dean, members of the teaching staff and other persons appointed by the university council. The responsibility for making academic decisions in the faculty lies with the faculty board, which comprises heads of departments, faculty heads on the various campuses, appointed and elected members of the teaching staff, elected members of the general staff, student members (international, undergraduate and postgraduate), nominees of other faculties and the library. Except in certain matters over which it has power to act, the faculty board makes recommendations to the education committee and to the academic board and through the academic board to the council of the university.

The faculty also has a number of committees, including an executive committee, education committee and committees for research, and equal opportunity.

The dean, as chief executive officer provides academic leadership to the faculty, presides over meetings of the faculty board and its committees and exercises a general superintendence over the educational and administrative affairs of the faculty. Each department of the faculty holds regular meetings and reports to faculty board.

The faculty manager, assisted by the group managers of the faculty is responsible for: the overall administration of the faculty, including matters relating to university statutes, regulations, the provision of advice on policy to faculty board and its related committees, management of the faculty's student services, financial, technical, human resources, marketing and recruitment and business development activities.
