Located at the Gippsland campus, the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences (HUMCASS) offers postgraduate study towards the degree of Master of Arts by research and the Doctor of Philosophy in a variety of disciplinary areas: Australian studies, cognitive science, communications, criminal justice, history, politics, sociology and women's studies.

Teaching and research within the school focuses around a number of disciplinary areas (HUMCASS has the expertise to offer multidisciplinary supervision.), including history, politics, journalism, communications, writing, sociology, social research, social welfare, cognitive science and criminal justice. Particular areas of academic expertise include Australian politics; Australian history; citizenship and governance; public policy; public relations, social policy; radio journalism; television journalism; cultural theory; mass communications; media studies; organisational communication; multimedia; relations between media, culture and power; writing; gender studies; feminist theory; community development; welfare practice and methodology; social work in rural contexts; sociology of work; sociology of deviance; environmental sociology; cross-cultural sociology; social research; sociology of race and ethnicity; research methodology; sociology of religion; sociology of children and family; and Australian urban and regional studies.
