Course description

This course allows suitably qualified paramedics an opportunity to upgrade their qualification to bachelor level. The course provides the necessary underpinning for professional ambulance paramedic practice.

Course objectives

By completion of this course, the graduate should demonstrate: the generic academic and professional attributes normally expected of a Monash University graduate; knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes consistent with contemporary professional ambulance and MICA paramedic clinical practice and an awareness of current trends and issues; an appreciation of current trends in the evolution of emergency health services both in Australia and overseas, as a basis for leading innovation in health care and responding to the challenge of change; knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to enable the ambulance and MICA paramedic to successfully perform as a paramedical clinical teacher and/or first line manager, and to promote quality ambulance care and the improvement of ambulance service delivery; knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes of the principles and practices of evidence-based practice, and their application to paramedic practice and service delivery; an expanded knowledge and understanding in a chosen area of special interest to the individual student; the academic attributes necessary to commence graduate studies in specialist areas of ambulance paramedic clinical practice and/or service delivery.

Course structure

To complete the degree conversion, ambulance paramedics require the successful completion of units totalling 48 points. Course requirements for interstate paramedics and Australian armed forces personnel will be determined on application

Course requirements

Students are required to complete four compulsory core units as follows:

First year

  • PAR3010 Professional issues in paramedic practice
  • PAR3020 Trends in pre-hospital care services

Second year

  • PAR3030 Ethical, legal and cultural issues
  • PAR3040 Evidence-based practice

These units will be supplemented by a minor stream of electives chosen from outside the faculty.
